About Syer hair and beauty
Salon of the Year 2014/15 voted for by the National Hairdressers’ Federation
Take a look at the history of how we began!!
Kenneth Syer commenced with Steiner at the Midland Hotel in Manchester in 1955. During his apprenticeship and styling years he dealt with many famous people, including Shirley Bassey, Rita Hayworth, Patula Clark and Lady Barberolli.
At the age of 24 he began his management career when he achieved the position of general manager of Steiner UK and maritime division (this included 14 ships plus the QE2). He was instrumental in the opening of many salons all over the world and was the motivator of many new ideas, he was the originator of the British Association of Professional Hairdressing Employers (BAPHE now HEA).
In 1989 he made an offer to the Steiner organisation to purchase their salon in Gracechurch shopping centre, Sutton Coldfield In 1991 the agreement with Steiner terminated and the name was changed to Syer retaining all of the hair stylists including Georgina McDougall and Natalie Smith who are still part of the current team.
In 1993 his daughter Kimberley joined the company after returning from London where she managed 14 London based salons. She currently runs the company while her father enjoys retirement whilst remaining as Managing Director.
Her current team includes Helen Bird who joined the company in 2003 and holds the position as manageress, Sharon Starkey-Hill who joined the company in 1993 from Rackhams Birmingham, Leigh who re-joined the company in 1994 having previously worked for Steiner in Sutton Coldfield.
The remaining stylists and beauty therapists have worked between seven and fifteen years, the majority having started their career with the company as apprentices. A major refurbishment took place in September 1997 and again in 2007 and most recently the entrance in 2010.
All members of the team continue with their education and visit training academies across the UK to gain experience and receive the most up-to-date training in the industry including afro Caribbean hairdressing and now have expanded the beauty department to include 3 therapists offering leading beauty names such as Guinot and Elemis, a comprehensive nail studio and most recently laser hair removal.
A family type environment is created within the salon and as a team we continue to maintain high standards and realise future expectations.
